what’s a website for?

since we’re Marooned and all, i’ll tell you about the time Bartholomew and his men were all ready for their hot and bloody work.

i’ve fallen in love with Pirates & Great Sea Rovers, by George Alfred Williams; published by George Alfred Williams at Children’s Books Online: the Rosetta Project, the largest collection of illustrated antique children’s books on line…we think.

“The Rosetta Project’s collections currently contain about 2,000 antique children’s books which were published in the 19th and early 20th century. We shall be putting these combined collections on line as funding permits. Our current goal of putting 2,000 volumes on line will create an online library of aproximately 65,000 html pages. However, as we are still collecting books from around the world, we expect the Rosetta Project online library to eventually reach millions of html pages.

After all, if a free online library’s reach cannot exceed its grasp, then what’s a website for?”

indeed.

Diagnosis Murder prescribed as hangover cure

from MP:
“You know there are at least three decent Diagnosis Murder fan sites? It doesn’t strike me as a show with an internet-savvy (i.e. under 70) audience.”

he included the urls. i checked them out and this is what i found:

Diagnosis-Murder.com is actually “writer/producer Lee Goldberg’s Web Page”

DMuk, Officially the best unofficial Diagnosis Murder website, is written by “a 17 year old student in full time education at a college in North Yorkshire, UK.”
did you catch that? seventeen.

Diagnosis Murder Fanfiction Challenge loves them an eagle picture. aside from that, this page offers fans the chance to post plotline “challenges” for other fans to write about. Challenge 158) I think it would be so cool for a circus to come to town. A hot trapeze artist and good friend of Steve’s gets murdered. His father goes undercover as a clown to try and solve the case.

when i asked MP, why Diagnosis Murder? he said, “My girlfriend used to watch reruns of the show with her friend when they were both not working. I gave it a “thumbs up” on my TiVo, so it records random episodes when there’s space. The show’s bad, but I find it soothing viewing when I’m hung over (which is often).”

les cheveux de ma mere

today is my mother’s birthday. she is as many years older than me as the age she was when i was born. happy birthday, mom.

this weekend, i’m going to go to detroit to visit with my family, as my mother, father, and brother’s birthdays are all in the next two weeks. on saturday, my mom is going to get a complete hair makeover. her haircut has pretty much been the same since i was a kid, with small variations. but she’s going to go in and tell them to do whatever they want. i’m excited to see what happens. and i’ll see it first hand, as i will be there getting my hair cut, also. i think this will be the first time since i was about 15 that i will step foot in a salon. in some ways, i am dreading it (ha ha. yes, i used to have dreadlocks for a while, although, my friend skateboard skot used to call them elvenlocks. he had some obscure historical reason, but he usually talked right over my head about that kind of thing so i can’t remember what it was), but i’m looking forward to hanging out with my mom.

he did have The Right Stuff, after all

Gus Grissom Didn’t Sink Liberty Bell 7, at space.com

“To detonate the ordnance, either Grissom would have to firmly bang his wrist on a plunger inside the capsule, or a diver greeting the spacecraft in the water could move a small panel on the outside and pull on a T-shaped handle.

Later experience would show that if a Mercury astronaut were to detonate the hatch from the inside, the amount of force necessary to hit and activate the plunger would leave a nasty bruise, which Grissom didn’t have.”

nerd signs

a nerd version of the zodiac. here’s mine:

Tux, the Penguin (January 20th ~ February 18th)

Free and independent-thinking, those born under the sign of Tux the Penguin are quick with thoughts and ideas, even if the rest of the world might not understand the thoughts and ideas in question. Rather than express feelings and problems with loud and aggressive warning and error messages that are apparent to anyone, their inner settings may only be visible to those who know them and have learned where and how to probe for them.

When it comes to romantic relationships, many people assume that those born under this sign would be incompatible or too complex, or that they simply wouldn’t serve their needs, but with proper care and patience—and a certain amount of tweaking and experimentation—those born under the sign of Tux, the Penguin, are compatible with many platforms and star signs.

deism.com

Interesting.

“…all the laws of nature that we’ve discovered and learned to use to our advantage that make everything from computers to medicine to space travel have existed eternally. But we’ve decided we’d rather live in superstition and fear instead of learning and gaining knowledge. It’s much more soothing to believe we’re not responsible for our own actions than to actually do the hard work required for success.”

the haida people

The Haida of the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii) have fascinated all who have visited them, from the first travellers and explorers of the late eighteenth century to the anthropologists of the present. To early visitors the Haida presented a culture, complex in social organization and rich in artistic expression, which displayed a fine and fulfilling balance between man and the natural and supernatural worlds. With continued exposure to the pressures, both spiritual and material, of European culture this balance was disrupted, and the traditional Haida way of life came close to extinction. Today, however, the Haida regard their future with hope, bolstered by recent developments that hold great potential for reinforcing their cultural revival.”

the end of the world as we know it

so ari just came out and told us the president will speak in about 25 minutes…and there is lightning and thunder here in chicago…and maybe we should all start making peace with ourselves and with our gods because it seems like the only peace we have the power to make.

and i’m not kidding, the anchor on abc news just said that Shock and Awe is a poetic turn of phrase.
