Jan 31 2003 // 11:12 am // permalink …and deeper in debtthis is what a grown-up looks like? as my friend mark would say, tomorrow i will be almost at the net in the tennis court that is one’s twenties. twenty-four things i am proud of accomplishing during my twenty-fourth year on the planet (which doesn’t mean i’m turning twenty-five, yo): 1. taught myself to play keyboards.
Thursday! Jan 30 2003 // 9:39 am // permalink the puppy what smells like a puppythis is cleo. we love her and her mom, very much. we will miss her. Wednesday! Jan 29 2003 // 10:03 am // permalink prawn of my loinsif there’s one thing i learnt in life it’s that learnin’ never taught me nothin’, and books is the worst. i watched Yellowbeard for the millionth time last night. i think it was my millionth viewing, if it wasn’t then it sure was a big waste of balloons and confetti…. i also watched Group Madness (the making of Yellowbeard). you can pick yourselves up off the floor now. all the laughing is making me self-conscious. anyway there’s this really great bit where they’re asking all the cast members what the difference between American and British comedy is, and marty feldman says something like, ‘American comedy is all about overacting and British comedy is about understatement’. except, when he’s saying understatement, he’s flapping his arms and bugging his eyes out (even more) and sort of running toward the camera. i made another lasagna, and burned the ever-loving crap out of my foot with the pasta water. i just poured the whole boiling pot right on it. luckily i have an aloe plant that i haven’t quite killed yet. it’s more like slow torture. the aloe plant, not the foot. the foot is more like fast torture…? ****************** Sunday! Jan 26 2003 // 4:49 pm // permalink updatesone side of a conversation overheard at a restaurant last night: lady: He designed the doors for the Stealth Bomber. lady: The Stealth Bomber. lady: That plane that nobody can see. ********** i’m going to make spinach tofu lasagna for everyone tonight. andy and christine have been very nice letting us crash at their house and use up all their hot water. last night they took us to this place called Cahoots, where we sat in a booth at the back and were assaulted by the most annoying, evil, loud music i’ve ever heard. we couldn’t decide if it was ironic or not. that probably means it was. everyone else at the place had a crazed look in their eyes, and people were tipping the pool tables. despite all that, i had the best french fries i’ve ever had in my life. andy said “these are the most original fries i’ve had in a long time.” i have to admit that i agreed with him - there seems to be only two methods to making french fries and both of them are pretty played out if you ask me. like at mcdonalds. those french fries is played out, dog.
Saturday! Jan 25 2003 // 3:41 pm // permalink a cold day in …louisville?today i learned that louisville is pretty much as cold as chicago. i’m taking a break from mixing right now, actually. listening to your voice played over and over and over and over and over can make your stomach turn and your eyes twitch. the repetitiveness is bad enough, but being subjected to all the imperfections and mistakes - man. i’m just worn out. and we’re only through one song. we’ve still got four to go. and people wonder why musicians are crazy. ****
Friday! Jan 24 2003 // 9:58 am // permalink one audience member for every degree below zerodespite the bitter cold, we had a few people show up last night. three? four? who can say… anyway, thanks to jeremy, jonathan, jonathan’s roommate (ha ha. you forgot me, so now i’m forgetting you), chris, sara, amanda?, ann, matthew, john?, and the really awesome girl whose name i can’t remember even though i’ve met her like ten times in the last week, for coming out to the show. i think there were two other people there that i didn’t get to meet, but thanks to you also. even though the crowd never really reached “crowd” status, the show was wonderful. wiretap wednesday did a spectaculary spooky and tense accompaniment of Un Chien Andalou (with a 23 yr. old Salvador Dali). i got to talk to them for a little while about surrealist films, and betty boop cartoons. if you’ve never seen a betty boop cartoon you’re missing some great surrealist treasures. ethan clauset showed some beatiful old films of what i believe are someone’s family vacations in the fifties. it was really dark, so i couldn’t tell what his equipment was like, but the music was leaning toward gritty and beautiful ambience. near the end there were some voices that came in singing what was obviously some sort of folk song, but i didn’t recognize the language. i asked him about it and he said it was from *somewhere in/near india that i can’t remember now*. the story being told in the song is incredibly complicated. it involved a woman, her husband, and his mother, and a missing nose ring. the transaction ensemble played one of our best sets to date. we are really getting good at communicating in the dark, and also being able to work through mistakes without the entire piece falling apart. we played two of the movements with alternate instruments (toys, shakers, etc.), which sounded very cool. this time we chose a key, which i think helped us keep things focused. last night was the first time i could actually hear steven’s bass, and that was the farthest away he’s ever stood from me. maybe that’s the secret. i came up with a joke to tell when i introduce us to the audience next time. ha. now you’ll have to come see us to hear the joke. suckers! tonight the autumn-waking leaves for louisville. we are going down there to mix our new recordings.
Thursday! Jan 23 2003 // 9:41 am // permalink friends is a repeatTONIGHT music! performed by: * ethan clauset * wiretap wednesday come for the music, stay for the petting zoo.
Wednesday! Jan 22 2003 // 12:48 pm // permalink ‘I mean: Madame Bovary, how provincial can you get?’Vonnegut at 80 war, jesus, radicalism, and of course, his writing. “…Socialism is idealistic. Think of Eugene Debs from Terre Haute. What Debs said echoes the Sermon on the Mount: ‘As long as there’s a lower class I am in it. As long as there is a criminal element, I am of it. As long as there is a soul in prison, I am not free.’ Now why can’t the religious right recognize that as a paraphrase of the Sermon on the Mount?” a very good question, Mr. Vonnegut. [via kevan] Tuesday! Jan 21 2003 // 12:49 pm // permalink My name in Latin is light to carry and victoriousi’ve been going here a lot. i also think of m. when i see this one ring that the Franklin Mint makes, called the Irish Blessing Ring, or something. it was designed by someone named Rhiannon, and one time m. told me he liked stevie nicks’ voice. bet you never thought you’d see larry levis and stevie nicks in the same log post, did you… but that’s what sans sheriff is all about. i’m keepin ya on your toes. speaking of unexpected things…the sun totally took me by surprise this morning. no, i didn’t forget about the sun. rather, the sunlight had a different quality about it than it’s had in past weeks. and even now, it still is shining very brightly - and uncharacteristically “warm” for this time of year. it feels good. on thursday night, you should come see me play with the transaction ensemble at Odum. (2116 W. Chicago Ave.) we’ll be showing the film we made last year. wiretap wednesday, and ethan clauset are also playing and showing films. wiretap wednesday is playing to Un Chien Andalou. Monday!
