a cold day in …louisville?

today i learned that louisville is pretty much as cold as chicago.
i also learned that i have a really freaking loud voice. in some places, we had to compress it by 25 db. holee crap that’s loud. that’s like as loud as a pick-up truck.

i’m taking a break from mixing right now, actually. listening to your voice played over and over and over and over and over can make your stomach turn and your eyes twitch. the repetitiveness is bad enough, but being subjected to all the imperfections and mistakes - man. i’m just worn out. and we’re only through one song. we’ve still got four to go.

and people wonder why musicians are crazy.

after much feedback *rimshot* (oh stop - sound jokes are funny and you know it) i've decided to clarify my statement about being as loud as a pick-up truck.

the way decibels and compression work would take me forever to explain. plus, i'd do it wrong.

simply put, i was loud like a pick-up truck before compression.

a particularly scientific explanation
a particularly simplistic explanation

the deal with decibels is that it is really not a fixed measurement... it is an expression of relationships.... the deal with sr's voice is that the relationship between her singing quiet and singing loudly is at least 25 dbs.... or another way to think about it (via her link) is that her soft singing is like a quiet home and her loud singing is like a city street....
when we were doing her first vocal take i nearly wept, it was so loud....
