permanent links. the way most web logs are set up, as new entries are added, older entries are pushed back to different pages. so if you link to, say, this page from another web site, or email that link to a friend, and tell them to look at the entry about permalinks, a week later it might not be on that page anymore. but if you email them this page the entry will always be there.
