Priming

Yesterday I went out to Tantre to visit one last time before I leave the state. A lot of my friends were there, Reid, Chris, Christine, Adam, David K., and of course Deb, Richard and Ari. There’s a new intern there, Paul, who was super nice.

I got to work most of the day with the guys and it was just as great as I’d remembered. Almost like we never left. We picked spinach in the greenhouse for a while because it was raining. Then we unloaded a truckload of potatoes that will be used for seeding - heavy! Richard was running electricity down to one of the greenhouses, so we dug a small trench for the line. It wasn’t quite time for lunch yet, so we unloaded a trailer of horse manure. This means we climbed on top of a mountain of manure mixed with sawdust bedding and forked it over the side till it was empty. Lunch came, and we had the usual Tantre feast with loud joking, lots of yogurt, homemade ice cream and tea for after. I really miss those meals with everyone! After lunch we went out and planted onion starts. They’d been soaking in fish emulsion and kelp and the field was impossibly muddy so the job was a wet one. I left partway through the afternoon smelling like horses, fish and dirt, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me happy!

Getting this little dose of farm has heightened my excitement to leave for Alaska. Now I just have to stop visiting with friends long enough to pack!
