A Laska Ate My Baby

1. I got a hat. It’s merino wool.
2. I found a sleeping bag. It’s down, I’m down.
3. My knife is still dull. Oh well.
4. The cd’s may not get ripped. But I have so much music on my mp3 player already…I should just stop being a baby.
5. Christine took all the yarn. And that is why she is great.
Addendum: I never found anyone to take care of my snake, Ginger “The Snake” Baker, so my brother is going to do it. He just doesn’t know it yet. If you’d like to snakesit all summer, let me know and I’m sure he’ll give up the position.

I am leaving tomorrow for Chicago! It’s true! And then I fly to Alaska on Monday! Oh my! Depending on how long it takes me to get settled up there, it may be a while till I update again. Please don’t let that stop you from emailing me. If you want my snail mail address, you can have it.

soon!

Visiting non-stop. Trying to get ready to get packed. Still need:

1. a hat, because I accidentally shrank my favorite hat that Freddy gave me.
and this hat which was my favorite for a while became the pumphouse flag.
and also this hat is my other favorite hat but it’s not very warm and I always end up changing it if there’s even a little bit of wind.

2. decide if I should bring the gigantic heavy sleeping bag that’s here, or wad up my down comforter(s I have two) and bring them. I’m actually planning on mailing whatever bedding I decide on. I feel like the down is the way to go because it’s a higher quality bedding than whatever that sleeping bag is made of. But what if I want to sleep outside at any point? But that bag is soooo heavy I probably won’t want to move it once I get it in there. Maybe I’m overestimating how cold it will be there at night and I should just bring the lighter weight packable sleeping bag that’s here. Anyone have a thought on this?

3. get my knife sharpened

4. get some photos printed

5. rip a bunch of cd’s (this may not happen, which would be sad)

6. get rid of a car trunk full of yarn. Anyone? Anyone?

Priming

Yesterday I went out to Tantre to visit one last time before I leave the state. A lot of my friends were there, Reid, Chris, Christine, Adam, David K., and of course Deb, Richard and Ari. There’s a new intern there, Paul, who was super nice.

I got to work most of the day with the guys and it was just as great as I’d remembered. Almost like we never left. We picked spinach in the greenhouse for a while because it was raining. Then we unloaded a truckload of potatoes that will be used for seeding - heavy! Richard was running electricity down to one of the greenhouses, so we dug a small trench for the line. It wasn’t quite time for lunch yet, so we unloaded a trailer of horse manure. This means we climbed on top of a mountain of manure mixed with sawdust bedding and forked it over the side till it was empty. Lunch came, and we had the usual Tantre feast with loud joking, lots of yogurt, homemade ice cream and tea for after. I really miss those meals with everyone! After lunch we went out and planted onion starts. They’d been soaking in fish emulsion and kelp and the field was impossibly muddy so the job was a wet one. I left partway through the afternoon smelling like horses, fish and dirt, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me happy!

Getting this little dose of farm has heightened my excitement to leave for Alaska. Now I just have to stop visiting with friends long enough to pack!

eat local, Alaska

In fifteen days I’ll be in Chicago for a visit then I’m flying out of O’Hare five days after that.

Jimi had a party for me on Friday. It was nuts. There was a talent show. And balloons. See my photos here, and Jimi’s here.

I made t-shirts to raise money for my trip. Want one?

Also, I’m considering having an auction to let someone cut my hair. It hasn’t been this long since elementary school. If anyone is interested in paying $150 - $200 to have the privilege of chopping my hair in any fashion they see fit, send them my way. They could dye it, too, if they want.
